If you are at least HTML editor savvy, I would suggest that you save a few thousands dollars and optimize your own web page.

Granted, if your target keyword is super-competitive (such as real estate, mortgage, insurance, gambling), then you definitely would not want to attempt to do web page optimization by yourself.

Keep in mind that this guide is only a reference to on-page optimization. When you are talking about search engine optimization, you also need to perform off-page optimization (mainly linking). However, the on-page factors are the least you can do in to optimize your webpage, so please do yourself a favor and read through this guide, and make the necessary changes to immediatly improve your search engine ranking.

The most important meta tags in your HTML web page is the tag. You want the title of the webpage to be descriptive yet in the meantime containing the keyword that you want to rank high for. So, let's say you sell auto tires, you don't want a title like "John's auto center" you want to say "auto tires by John" In other words, your title tag should contain the search keyword that you want the search engines to rank you on.

The next tag that you want to watch out for is In that tag you want to best describe what your website is about. You almost want to put your sales letter in there because the meta description is used by most search engines in the search results (right below your title). It's also a good idea to write your meta description with a good mix of keywords ("auto tires" in the previous example), because search engines tend to bold the keywords in your title & description that matches the keywords being searched.

That's it for today's tip on web page optimization. There is more to come, so bookmark this site and come back next week!
